Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez will seek a second opinion after being told he would need surgery on a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

On Monday, Fernandez was informed that he would need Tommy John surgery to repair the torn ligament by Dr. Neil ElAttrache. He is now scheduled to meet with the Marlins' team physician to see if he will receive the same diagnosis.

The 21-year-old Fernandez has a 2.44 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched this season, and leads all of baseball with 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
