Report: Orioles catcher Matt Wieters could be headed for surgery soon

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters could soon be headed for elbow surgery after Fox Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal tweeted on Monday that the two-time All-Star is not progressing with his throwing program quite like he had hoped.

Rosenthal also cautioned that despite two sources talking about the poor prognosis for Wieters, a third source close to his rehab situation said that Wieters has good days and bad days and it's still too early to tell whether surgery is definitely the route to go at this point.

Wieters, 28, has been on the disabled list since May because of a right elbow strain. He was eligible to come off the DL on May 26 but his rehab has clearly not gone as planned. A decision will likely be made before July 1, and in the meantime, Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundle will continue to handle catching duties for the Orioles. Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com tweeted on Monday that Witeters will see renowned sports orthopedist Dr. James Andrews on June 16 because he still has discomfort in his elbow.

Prior to being sidelined, he was projected to put up career numbers with averages of .308/.339/.500 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 112 plate appearances. Heading into Monday's home game vs. the Red Sox, the Orioles were 31-30 and second in the AL East.
