Judge accepts deal in ex-UNLV player's theft case

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Las Vegas judge on Monday accepted a former UNLV basketball player's written guilty plea to reduced petty theft and trespass charges and restitution for items stolen from a friend's apartment last May.

Savon Goodman, 20, has moved back home to the Philadelphia area, and Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Cynthia Cruz agreed to waive his appearance in court.

Under terms of a written Nov. 25 plea deal, Goodman agreed to pay $1,370 in restitution, serve 200 hours of community service and stay out of trouble for a year.

Defense attorney William Terry paid the restitution Monday.

The judge said Goodman could face four months in county jail if he violates terms of the agreement.

Prosecutors dropped two felony burglary and grand larceny charges that could have gotten Goodman up to 15 years in prison, and one misdemeanor conspiracy count.

Goodman was arrested in August and quit the Runnin' Rebels in October, after coach Dave Rice announced he would sit out the 2013-14 season.

The 6-foot-6 sophomore forward had been expected to take on an expanded role for the Rebels this year, after averaging 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in about 9 minutes per game in 27 games last season.

Goodman was identified as one of three people who made off with expensive sneakers, cash and video games during an overnight burglary May 18 at an apartment near the UNLV campus.
