Marquette guards Deonte Burton and John Dawson will transfer at the conclusion of the fall semester, the school announced Tuesday

Burton and Dawson, both sophomores, were recruited by former Marquette coach Buzz Williams, who left prior to this season to take over the head coaching role at Virginia Tech

"We appreciate all that Deonte and John have contributed to the program since our staff arrived in April," Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said in a statement. "We will do everything we can to help them make the next step in their respective careers and wish them nothing but the best in the future."

Burton had played in each of Marquette's first eight games this season, averaging 6.4 points in 16.1 minutes per game. Dawson played four minutes in the Golden Eagles' season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin but did not see action in the other seven games.

Though center Luke Fischer, a transfer from Indiana, will become eligible at the start of the new season, Marquette will only have nine scholarship players available.
