After jumping to a 35-24 first-half lead over Wisconsin, Iowa was losing momentum in the second half. With his team holding on to a 41-39 lead, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery decided he was unhappy with the officials. Following a foul call on Gabriel Olaseni, McCaffery erupted with a midcourt tantrum that led to a technical foul and another immediately after for bumping into an official, resulting in McCaffery's ejection.
McCaffery downplayed the importance of the ejection after the game, saying, "''What I feel bad about is getting the second one. I think the first one, it's safe to say, I kind of went after that a little bit.'' However, Wisconsin's Ben Brust hit all four free throws and Nigel Hayes (who was fouled by Olaseni) hit one of his two, giving the Badgers a 44-41 lead. They went on to win 75-71.
It should be noted that this isn't McCaffery's first time losing his temper
