Syracuse considering constructing a new retractable-roof stadium

As folks in Syracuse, N.Y., cry to save the Carrier Dome, just what exactly are they saving it from? Well, how does a brand-new, 40,000-seat retractable-roof stadium for the entire city of Syracuse, including Syracuse University’s football and basketball teams, sound?

The latest reports out of up-state New York via the Post-Standard has this new stadium -- still in “preliminary” planning -- hosting everything from The Orange’s two most high-profile sports teams to local lacrosse, hockey and potentially big-name concerts.

Syracuse is no stranger to housing football and basketball in the same expansive venue, with the nearly 50,000-seat, on-campus Carrier Dome home to both sports since it opened in 1980. But 34 years later the allure of a new dome on a 14-acre site has some politicians clamming up and other saying the combination of public and private financing could prove a benefit to the city and the university.

"Discussions about all of our facilities are always ongoing, and this is simply a reflection of that as we have been and will continue to discuss the future of the Dome, whatever that may be," Syracuse spokesperson Joseph Giansante tells SI.com. "The Dome is 30 years old and is still an iconic building in all of college sports."

The proposed location puts the potential new venue just a mile north of the Carrier Dome, a simple jaunt up Irving Avenue and still incredibly close to campus.

While Syracuse University officials haven’t made it a secret they want upgrades to the Carrier Dome, an entirely new venue certainly provides an option. Syracuse residents may soon have to figure out if a new stadium is something really worth saving the Carrier Dome from.
