Report: Kansas nabs Tharpe replacement in top unsigned point guard Devonte Graham

One day after losing its starting point guard, Kansas picked up a timely commitment from top uncommitted recruit Devonte Graham on Friday afternoon.

Per ESPN's Jeff Goodman, in wake of Thursday's announcement that incumbent lead guard Naadir Tharpe would transfer, the Jayhawks received a commitment from Graham -- a four-star prospect ranked No. 36 in the Class of 2014 by Rivals.com and the highest-rated player left on the board.

After being released from his letter of intent from Appalachian State in April, Graham, a dynamic 6-foot-2 guard, saw his recruitment intensify. Originally a member of the 2013 class, he committed to the school in October 2012 before asking out of his NLI four months later.

Former Appalachian State coach Jason Capel denied Graham's release, and the point guard opted instead to take a fifth year and prep at at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. After Capel was fired in March, new Mountaineers head coach Jim Fox finally granted Graham's request.

A strong senior season led to new interest from schools including Virginia and N.C. State. After narrowing down his options, the North Carolina native chose the Jayhawks over the Wolfpack.

Kansas returns unproven rising sophomores Frank Mason and Connor Frankamp at the point, giving Graham a chance to get in the mix immediately. He joins two five-star recruits in power forward Cliff Alexander and small forward Kelly Oubre as part of another impactful recruiting class for head coach Bill Self.
