The Bruins not only suffered their latest embarrassing loss of the season on Saturday -- a 27-7 defeat at the hands of lowly Washington State, which was previously 2-5 -- they lost their starting running back, too. Kahlil Bell, who had run for 817 yards on 142 carries, tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the first quarter and will be out for the season. It's terrible timing for an injury; UCLA has a brief reprieve against Arizona next week, but then must face Arizona State, Oregon and USC in a row to close the season.

Is Daniel Evans -- the same quarterback who presided over seven straight losses to close 2006 -- now the remedy for N.C. State's ills? The son of ex-Pack quarterback and punter Johnny Evans has led State to back-to-back wins over East Carolina and Virginia, keeping slim bowl hopes alive after a 1-5 start. In his latest effort, a 29-24 win over the Cavs, Evans threw for a career-high 347 yards and three touchdowns.
