An offensive onslaught of 441 total yards and 42 points got the 'Cats an impressive win against Purdue, but the bigger score was the No. 22 ranking in the first BCS report. In examining their stock's rise, the Wildcats point to their sack exchange -- they're leading the Big 10 with three sacks per game and allowing just 0.7. Northwestern is favored against Indiana this week, but the tests get tougher with Minnesota and Ohio State on the horizon. The business-minded Wildcats will need to show their whole portfolio for all three contests.

After being shelled by Virginia, 26-0, the team most symbolic of the ACC's wackiness put an eggshell on previously-ranked Wake Forest, and now stands tied with Florida State and Boston College for first place in the Atlantic Division at 2-1. Whether or not the College Parkers will shrink back into their shells against N.C. State will not be determined until the game is played, but the challenges continue in the coming weeks. Trips to Blacksburg and Chestnut Hill and visits from the Tar Heels and Seminoles lie ahead. For a team that seems to get up for the big games and play dead in the gimmes, the most dangerous game left on the schedule may be this week against the 2-5 Wolfpack.

Striking in their all-Cardinal uniforms, the Wildcats impressed in their 42-27 upset of Cal. Off to a 5-2 start for the first time since 2000, they are currently tied atop the conference standings. "A lot was written and much said and a lot of times we were written off," 'Zona coach Mike Stoops said to reporters afterward, "but we keep coming back." A win against top-ranked USC would sure go a long way toward proving they have staying power.

These are hard times in Lawrence when Todd Reesing passes for 342 yards and two scores and Dezmon Briscoe sets school records with 12 catches and 269 yards, and you still lose 45-31 to Oklahoma. The Jayhawks -- who have suffered both losses against top-25 teams -- have yet to beat a ranked foe. If they want to prove their mettle, they have another shot against No. 7 Texas Tech Saturday. Also, they still have two more talented Big 12 teams on the schedule in Missouri and Texas.

The Falcons threw just seven times last week, but six of those passes were completions by freshman quarterback Tim Jefferson, who proved economical in his attack with 162 yards. Even more impressive were his runs to daylight. Looking adept as a foot soldier, he scampered for 99 yards on 13 carries in securing the 29-28 win over UNLV.
