Able to avoid another crushing early-season loss to Michigan, the Irish instead watched their coach collapse like a three-legged chair on the sideline when run into by his own defensive end, John Ryan. Not necessarily known for his athletic prowess, Weis was nimble in the postgame press conference, joking that Tom Brady has nothing on him and that he felt like an athlete while he discussed his ACL tear. The head leprechaun will have to be quick on his feet again as the Irish play Michigan State in East Lansing.

Two years ago, the Scarlet Knights enjoyed their greatest success in a made-for-TV, come-from-behind win over Louisville on a Thursday night. Last week, the Garden Staters were exposed on national television. Run over by UNC's tailbacks and burned on routes by the Heels' receivers, Rutgers is 0-2, and resembles the pre-Louisville-victory program that struggled to attract fans. Head coach Greg Schiano says it's too early to write off this team. It's getting late mighty early in Piscataway, though.

Sylvester Croom's Bulldogs held No. 9 Auburn to a field goal and recorded a safety on defense because of a holding call in the end zone, but still wound up losing in their upset bid. To say the least, the offense did not carry its half, gaining only 116 yards total. "We're so close to being the offense that we want to be," MSU quarterback Wesley Carroll said. "And it may not have looked like that Saturday night, but we really are one play away from having the expected offense."

Are the Dukies for real? Two wins by mid-September suggests the transformation under David Cutcliffe is ahead of schedule. The Blue Devils get some rest from these heady times this week, and next face an ACC challenger in Virginia, whose defense allowed 506 yards against UConn last week.
