Notre Dame WR DaVaris Daniels to miss spring over academic issue

Notre Dame receiver DaVaris Daniels (10) will not be enrolled this spring because of an academic issue.

Yet another tumultuous Notre Dame football offseason began with its defense taking multiple personnel hits. Now, the offense will be without a playmaking wide receiver for the near future.

DaVaris Daniels, the team's second-leading receiver in 2013, will not be enrolled for the spring semester. Daniels confirmed the news through a statement released by his father, Phil, to SI.com.

Daniels appealed possible disciplinary action in order to play in the Fighting Irish's 29-16 Pinstripe Bowl victory over Rutgers on Dec. 28, a source with knowledge of the situation told SI.com. But the spring-semester banishment was anticipated to hold.

"I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility," Daniels said in the statement. "Therefore I will not be attending Notre Dame the spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish."

Daniels, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound junior from Vernon Hills, Ill., caught 49 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns last season. With the graduation of leading receiver TJ Jones, Daniels is expected to be a prime target for quarterback Everett Golson in 2014 -- returning from his own one-semester exile for academic issues -- though the pair now must wait longer than expected to rekindle their rapport.

Daniels further confirmed his trajectory by tweeting that the developments are a "small bump" while adding that he is "not entering the draft."
