Everett Golson will start at quarterback in Notre Dame's season opener against Rice on Aug. 30, head coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday.
Golson, a redshirt junior, led the Fighting Irish to the BCS National Championship Game as a redshirt freshman in 2012 but was dismissed from school in the spring of 2013 after he was caught cheating on a test. He was re-admitted to Notre Dame last December and re-joined the team.
Kelly had said Golson wouldn't immediately get his starting job back, and sophomore Malik Zaire was also competing to start. Zaire was unhappy when informed of the decision to start Golson, Kelly said.

Senior Tommy Rees took over for Golson last season, throwing for 3,257 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as the Fighting Irish went 9-4.
