Sophomore Chad Voytik has been named Pittsburgh's starting quarterback for the Aug. 30 season opener against Delaware, coach Paul Chryst announced on Thursday.
Voytik completed 6-of-11 passes for 116 yards last season as the backup to Tom Savage, a fourth-round pick in this year's draft.
“For our team, it wasn’t a big mystery,” Chryst said, according to 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. “It was one of those things that I thought the focus didn’t need to be on that. Chad [Voytik] and Trey [Andreson] just needed to concentrate on being a better player, a better quarterback, and I thought they did that in camp and wanted to announce it today to get all the talk out of the way so we can just lock in on game week.”
The Panthers, who posted a 7-6 record last season, were picked to finish sixth in the ACC Coastal Division in a preseason media poll.
