Alabama is the new No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings
Alabama moved up to No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, while previous No. 1 Mississippi State fell to No. 4. Oregon comes in at No. 2, with Florida State at No. 3.
The complete top 25 is as follows:
3. Florida State
4. Mississippi State
6. Ohio State
8. Ole Miss
11. Michigan State
12. Kansas State
13. Arizona State
18. Georgia Tech
• The question of how far Mississippi State would fall has been answered. The Bulldogs fell to No. 4 after losing at Alabama over the weekend. They only boast one win over a team currently ranked in the selection committee’s top 25 – that came against a reeling 7-3 Auburn squad – but that resume was strong enough to keep the Bulldogs in the top four. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide replaced their SEC foe atop the rankings.
• Florida State has a potential argument for the committee’s No. 1 spot, but it remained at No. 3 behind two one-loss squads. The ‘Noles’ two biggest wins to date came against Clemson and Notre Dame, both of which lost this past weekend. Currently Florida State’s resume includes only two victories against top-25 teams, No. 22 Clemson and No. 24 Louisville.
• Will the selection committee ever recognize a Group of Five program? No school outside the Power Five conferences has cracked the playoff’s rankings yet, and there’s no telling when one might make the jump. But a Group of Five team is guaranteed a spot in one of the New Year’s Six bowls in the playoff system. Could undefeated Marshall sneak in from Conference USA? What about Colorado State or Boise State from the Mountain West? So far, it’s clear the selection committee cares very little about Group of Five contenders.
