Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott (6/1) is the opening betting favorite to win the 2015 Heisman Trophy, according to Bovada.

Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott (7/1) and LSU running back Leonard Fournette (7/1) are close behind. 

Elliott, a rising junior, had a breakout sophomore season and helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship title. He had 1,878 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 220 receiving yards.

He rushed for more than 220 yards in each of the team's last three games. In the Big Ten title game against Wisconsin, he piled up 220 yards and two scores. Elliott rushed for 230 yards and two more scores against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. He saved his best for last in the College Football Playoff national title game, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns as Ohio State beat Oregon.

Prescott led Mississippi State to its first ever No. 1 ranking during a 9-0 start to his junior season. A dual-threat quarterback, he threw for 3,449 yards, 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding 986 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.

Fournette rushed for 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman last season for the Tigers. He rushed for at least 100 yards in five games, including in wins over Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin (15/2) and USC quarterback Cody Kessler (12/1) round out the top five.

Ohio State's trio of returning quarterbacks are also listed in the top 12. Cardale Jones (14/1), J.T. Barrett (16/1) and Braxton Miller (18/1) are all expected to compete for the starting job for the defending national champions.
