Oklahoma freshman running back Joe Mixon has rejoined the team, according to running backs coach Cale Gundy.

Mixon was suspended for the 2014 season after being investigated for allegedly assaulting an Oklahoma female student at a restaurant near campus in July.

In October, Mixon entered an Alford plea on a misdemeanor assault charge. As part of the plea, Mixon agreed to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo cognitive behavior counseling. He was also given a one-year deferred sentence.

“He’s been like a caged tiger, I can tell you that,” Gundy said Wednesday, according to Tulsa World. “I know this, whenever we cut that lock off that cage, my man came out running.”

The top-rated all-purpose back in the recruiting class of 2014, according to, Mixon was expected to compete for playing time with sophomores Keith Ford and Alex Ross.

In 2014, Oklahoma ranked first in the Big 12 in rushing yards per attempt and finished with an 8-5 record.
