University of Illinois chancellor Phyllis Wise announced her resignation Thursday.
Wise, in a statement, cited ”external issues” that have distracted the university and its operations in the past year. “I have concluded that these issues are diverting much needed energy and attention from our goals,” she wrote.
Those issues include allegations of mistreatment within the Illinois football and women's basketball programs. An independent investigation by a law firm hired by the university recently found claims of racial discrimination on the women's team were unfounded, though seven former players have filed a $10 million lawsuit against Illinois coaches and the athletic director, Mike Thomas.
The investigation into the football program remains ongoing in wake of accusations by a former player toward head coach Tim Beckman based on “abuse and misuse of power.”
