Redshirt junior Perry Hills will begin the season as Maryland's starting quarterback, head coach Randy Edsall announced Friday.

Hills, who was Maryland's starter as a true freshman in 2012 before experiencing a torn ACL, beat out redshirt junior Caleb Rowe and graduate transfer Daxx Garman for the position.

In seven games in 2012, Hills had 1,336 passing yards for eight touchdowns. He threw seven interceptions.

Hills hasn't started since 2012, and has seen game action just twice since then.

In an Aug. 22 intrasquad scrimmage, Hills went 12-for-17 with 72 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Maryland opens the 2015 season Sept. 5 at home against Richmond.
