Joseph Jr., who was known as “MJ” by his teammates, and his father Keith Joseph Sr. died in a car accident on the night of Nov. 6, while en route to a Mississippi high school football game.
Joseph Jr., a freshman defensive end, joined Mississippi State in February 2014 and was in the midst of redshirting this season. His father was a linebacker for the Bulldogs from 1989 to 1992. His 14 sacks put him at 10th on the school’s all-time list.
Peters, who will wear Joseph Jr.’s No. 99 after usually wearing No. 12, has 17 tackles, two pass break breakups and a sack for Mississippi State this season.
The school announced Monday that the entire team will wear helmet decals on Saturday with the letters “MJ” emblazoned on them.
Kickoff between the No. 17 Bulldogs and No. 2 Crimson Tide is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
