James Madison co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Adrian Mayes will be the new offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Texas State coach Everett Withers according to a source.

Considered a rising young coach and recruiter, Mayes worked a week at James Madison under Withers, who left to become Texas State's coach last week. It's a return to Texas for Mayes, who spent this past season as Houston's director of football recruiting.

​Mayes worked a week at James Madison under Withers, who left to become Texas State's coach last week. It's a return to Texas for Mayes, who spent this past season as Houston's director of football recruiting.

Before that, he was an offensive graduate assistant for a season after spending three years at Rice, where he assisted with the offensive and defensive lines. He also did a Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the New York Jets in 2013, working with the running backs.

He got his start in coaching as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at his alma mater, Kansas. A Manhattan, Kan. product, he was an offensive lineman for the Jayhawks from 2004-08.

Withers had an 18-7 record in his two seasons at James Madison that includes a 9-3 record this past year. He replaces Dennis Franchione, who announced his retirement last month after a 39-43 record in his five seasons, including a 3-9 mark this past year.
