BYU center Corbin Kaufusi, a 6'10" center, will play football in addition to basketball next season, the school announced Friday.
Kaufusi originally signed a letter of intent to play football at BYU, but joined the basketball team instead following a two-year Mormon mission. He started 36 of 70 games over the last two seasons. Kaufusi plans to work out with both teams in the off-season, spend an entire season with the football team beginning in August, and then rejoin the basketball team when football concludes.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play football at BYU,” Kaufusi said in a statement. “I’m really excited about what is happening with football. I’m looking forward to being coached by my dad and learning from him and my teammates. I’m grateful for the support of the basketball coaches as I pursue this opportunity.”
“We’re excited for Corbin to have this opportunity,” head basketball coach Dave Rose said. “We’re very supportive of this decision and will look forward to having him back with us full-time when the football season is over.”
