Former Penn State quarterback Steven Bench is transferring to South Florida, Bench announced on his Twitter account on Thursday.
Bench, who left Penn State largely because of a crowded quarterback competition with juco transfer Tyler Ferguson and incoming freshman Christian Hackenberg, opted to transfer from the Nittany Lions last month. Given the ongoing NCAA sanctions at Penn State, Bench is eligible to play immediately and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Reports originally surfaced that Bench was mulling a move to Mississippi State. A native of Cairo, Ga., Bench was reportedly intrigued by the option of landing closer to home. But he liked what new USF coach Willie Taggart is building with the Bulls, according to ESPN's Joe Schad:
Bench completed 2-of-8 passes for 12 yards in two games last season while backing up Penn State starter Matt McGloin. Bench should compete immediately with senior Bobby Eveld
and sophomore Matt Floyd
to replace departed starter B.J. Daniels at USF.
