A case of vandalism has hit Clemson's campus. The school announced on Wednesday night that its iconic Howard's Rock at Memorial Stadium was vandalized by an unknown number of perpetrators sometime between June 2 and June 3.

The school released a statement confirming the vandalism:

"A small portion of The Rock was broken off of its pedestal after vandals broke the casing that protects the artifact."

"There was no damage to the pedestal that supports the rock."

Tigers' athletic director Dan Radakovich confirmed that an investigation into the act is ongoing:

"We take vandalism, especially of such an important part of our history, very seriously. Police are investigating."

Clemson did not shed light on any potential suspects, but the school was indirectly involved in a similar incident earlier this offseason. In April, South Carolina staffers found what appeared to be Clemson-like paw prints spray-painted on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium. Prints were also found on one of the Gamecocks' railroad cars on display.

According to the Clemson's website, Howard's Rock has been a staple of school tradition since September 24, 1966, when the Tigers beat Virginia 40-35. It was originally a gift to former coach Frank Howard, and players began a tradition of rubbing Howard's Rock prior to each home game before a 23-6 win over Wake Forest on September 23, 1967.
