The college football offseason got a little busier on Monday, as an unprecedented trade shook up a relatively quiet news cycle. In a stunning move, Stanford agreed to send its Twitter handle, @SUAthletics, to Syracuse, the Cardinal athletic department announced.
As a result of the deal, Stanford's official Twitter handle will change to @GoStanford. But more significantly, the deal includes a number of high-profile and ultra-important considerations, including the following:
To complete the trade, Syracuse will send a collection of local goods to be named later but also including one case of oranges, which Stanford intends to use in refilling its 2011 Orange Bowl trophy.
Understandably, Stanford AD Bernard Muir couldn't hold back his excitement over the exchange:
“Obviously we’re thrilled to activate @GoStanford as our official Twitter handle and pull off this dynamic trade,” said Muir. “From a branding standpoint, this trade makes sense for both schools. We held both accounts – the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks, and we wanted to derive as much value fun as possible. We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home.”
On paper, the winner of the trade appears to be Stanford, both for crafting the press release and because its @GoStanford handle boasts a much more school-specific moniker. But the potential of @SUAthletics shouldn't be ignored in this deal; the handle's length and upside were highly touted as a Twitter recruit. Both handles are eligible to tweet immediately.
