USF will be losing a key member of the defense for the 2013 season, as senior defensive back Josh Brown suffered a torn Achilles during a recent workout, Greg Aumen of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

According to Aumen, Brown underwent surgery on his Achilles on Tuesday, and should be ready for spring drills in 2014 after a six- to eight-month recovery.

Brown was slated to be the Bulls' starting nickel defensive back, as he finished spring drills on the depth chart behind senior Brandon Salinas and sophomore Kenneth Durden at cornerback. This means the position could look very young in the fall, with USF possibly looking to redshirt freshman Chris Bivins, true freshman Lamar Robbins or JUCO transfer Torrel Saffold to fill the void in the defensive backfield.

USF will be forced to petition for a sixth year of eligibility for Brown, who redshirted before playing his sophomore season at Arizona Western Community College in 2010. He later transferred to USF after the 2011 season. Brown recorded 11 tackles and one tackle for loss in his first season with the Bulls in 2012.
