Vanderbilt has dismissed wide receiver Chris Boyd from its football program four days after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor accessory charge for his role in trying to cover up the alleged rape of an unconscious student in June, the school announced on Tuesday.

Vanderbilt vice chancellor for public affairs Beth Fortune released a statement regarding Boyd's status with the football team:

“Vanderbilt’s athletic administration, in conjunction with its head football coach, today dismissed Chris Boyd from the university’s football team and athletic program. The action came after an ongoing review that included information disclosed during a hearing Sept. 13 in Davidson County Criminal Court.

“The review concluded that Mr. Boyd’s admitted actions are clearly inconsistent with the high standards of behavior expected of our student-athletes.”

Boyd is the fifth Commodores player to be dismissed from the program following the alleged on-campus rape of a 23-year-old female student on June 23. On June 29, Vanderbilt dismissed players Corey Batey, Brandon Banks, Jaborian McKenzie and Brandon Vandenburg, who were each later charged with five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery on Aug. 9.

Boyd turned himself in to Nashville police on Aug. 17 surrounding allegations that he had been an accessory to the rape. He had been suspended for the Commodores' first three games of the 2013 season.

Boyd was Vanderbilt's second-leading receiver in 2012, recording 50 catches for 774 yards and five touchdowns.
