Virginia Tech outlasts Marshall 29-21 in rain-soaked triple-overtime affair

As heavy rain drenched attendees at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium on Saturday, the last thing fans probably expected was extra football. But that's exactly what took place in a back-and-forth meeting between the Hokies and Thundering Herd. It took some late heroics by much-maligned quarterback Logan Thomas for Virginia Tech to ultimately emerge with a 29-21 triple-overtime victory.

Thomas, who had thrown three touchdowns to four interceptions through the season's first three games, wasn't very accurate early for the Hokies. He went 6-of-17 with two interceptions in the first half, as Marshall carried a 21-14 lead into the break. Virginia Tech's defense wasn't living up to its billing, either. Marshall had gained 205 yards by halftime; Alabama gained just 206 total yards in a 35-10 win over coach Frank Beamer's squad on Aug. 31.

Still, after a scoreless third quarter, the Hokies responded. Thomas completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Willie Byrn -- a pass that deflected off the fingertips of Marshall cornerback Darryl Roberts -- to tie the score at 21 with 3:15 remaining. Marshall's potential go-ahead drive was thwarted when Virginia Tech's Kyshoen Jarrett made an impressive interception on a Rakeem Cato heave with just more than a minute to play:

The teams headed into two straight scoreless overtimes before Thomas rushed for a two-yard touchdown in the third overtime. The Hokies hung on after Marshall wideout Davonte Allen dropped a Cato pass in the back of the end zone to close out the game.
