Report: Archie Manning to join the college football playoff committee
If anything, this whole big reveal of the college football playoff committee could have been done in a much more interesting fashion, as former Campus Union blogger Holly Anderson suggested over a year ago. There's something cheap and hollow about learning these members one by one in a rollout of anonymous sources and reports. That said, we know our newest member, and that is No. 1 dad and former Ole Miss and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Archie Manning, according to USA Today's George Schroeder.
Manning has the name recognition and the clout to make a dent with the committee, but I'm not sure what exactly he offers that the other members don't already. Aside from the inclusion of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the makeup of the remaining members is pretty much the same. So we're not going to get people arguing or fighting to make changes or force a team that might not make it into the hunt.
It would have been nice if there were one or two other "Who?" or "What?" members if only to shake things up a bit more, whether that be a NASA scientist, a statistician, a broadcaster or world-renowned chef Thomas Keller. Rice fits that mold, somewhat, and there should be more diversity than just a bunch of older athletic directors, former players and school presidents in the group.Schroeder also suggests Clemson's Dan Radakovich will fill out the major conference athletic directors.
