BYU is set to play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl after the 2016 and 2018 seasons, the school announced Wednesday.

If the Cougars are not selected to participate in the College Football Playoff in either of those seasons and are bowl-eligible, they will play a program from the Mountain West in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.

As an independent program, BYU does not enjoy a bowl tie-in that comes with conference affiliation. Earlier this season, the Cougars accepted an invitation to play in this year's Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco. MANDEL: Complete 2013 bowl projections: Solving the SEC logjam
