Kevin Sumlin has agreed to a new six-year contract to remain the head coach at Texas A&M, Aggies' athletic director Eric Hyman announced on Saturday.

The news was first reported by Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com. Terms of the deal are still pending.

Hyman said Sumlin's contract represents a true commitment by the university.

“Coach Sumlin has demonstrated why he is considered among the nation’s elite football coaches. His coaching and recruiting abilities are only secondary to his integrity, class and passion for his student-athletes and this University,” Hyman said. “Texas A&M is making a sincere commitment to Kevin. We are fortunate that he is committed to remain an Aggie for a long time to come, and we are excited about what the future has in store.”

Sumlin, who is finishing his second season with the Aggies, had been mentioned as a possible replacement for Lane Kiffin at USC since Kiffin's abrupt ouster in September. The Trojans had reportedly made Sumlin their top target in the school's upcoming coaching search.

In a statement, Sumlin said his new contract is the next step in the development of Texas A&M's football program.

“I am humbled and very appreciative of the commitment that Texas A&M has extended not only to me and my family, but to our football program overall." Sumlin said. "We have only just begun to lay the foundation for sustained, long-term success here at Texas A&M, and we will work hard every day to make this great institution and the 12th Man proud.”
Sumlin is 19-5 as Texas A&M's head coach, including an 11-win campaign in 2012, the program's debut season in the SEC. Prior to arriving in College Station, Sumlin led Houston to a school-record 12 wins and its highest finish in the BCS rankings in '11.
