Jadeveon Clowney's agent asks South Carolina sandwich shop to change its marquee

Those crazy sandwich shops, always drumming up offseason controversy. We’ve seen it a million times. This time, Sub Station II, in Rock Hill, S.C., was forced to change its marquee, which previously referenced the speeding tickets issued to South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The sign now contains a thinly veiled message referencing a request made by Clowney’s agent, Bus Cook.

From Don Worthington of The State, who has bravely covered this story since earlier in the week, the sign had previously read, “Hurry in for our Jadeveon Clowney sub it goes really fast.” Now it reads, “Owner on the lam til Monday/ Hiding from the Bus.”

Per Worthington:

The sub shop does not have a Clowney item on the menu, and [Sub Station II owner Charlie] Ruffalo maintains his sign is “all in good fun.”

He said Thursday that his shop has not profited from using Clowney’s name.

Clowney’s name, Ruffalo maintains, is in the public domain and this is an issue of free speech, not commercial speech.

The Rock Hill Herald had a video detailing the story. In it, Ruffalo said, "We just make fun of everybody. I don't care who you are -- politician, sports figure, whatever -- I'm going to make fun of you if you do something silly."

Remember, this is not the first Clowney-and-sandwich related news of late. There was also the story about the controversial menu items from the Daniel Island Grille and the time that the Gamecocks famously visited Arby's.
