Three bowl games are being audited by the IRS over recent tax returns, Jeremy Folwer of CBSSports.com reports.

The Alamo, Gator and Fight Hunger bowls have been notified of the audits by the IRS. Fight Hunger Bowl executive director Gary Cavalli told CBSSports.com that the IRS said audits can be triggered by tips or media reports, which can detail bowls with recent revenue increases.

The 2011 Fight Hunger Bowl between Nevada and Boston College saw a spike of $3,843,572 in total revenue, up from $3,575,439 in 2010. Meanwhile, the Gator Bowl, which ironically is sponsored by TaxSlayer.com, ended the 2011 fiscal year with $9,337,137 in total revenue, a sharp increase from the $8,304,131 that it reported for the previous year.

Fowler did not report specifics surrounding the Alamo Bowl's audit, but sources told CBSSports.com that Alamo's internal auditor is scheduled to speak at the Football Bowl Association next month on the topic of how to respond to an IRS audit.

Cavalli told Fowler that the scandal surrounding the Fiesta Bowl and its executive, John Junker, in 2011 altered the perception of the bowl industry.

“The Fiesta Bowl experience really changed a lot of things in the bowl industry,” Cavalli said. “There were a lot of charges levied against bowls and bowl directors that were almost all false, but there was a little bit of truth to some of them, and football gave credibility to some of those charges." “Thirty-four of 35 bowls were doing things right.”
