Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is one of 19 candidates in consideration to become the next president of the University of Akron, according to Karen Farkas of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Tressel, the school's current executive vice president for students, first submitted a letter regarding his candidacy for interim president of the university in January, not long after current Akron president Luis Proenza announced he would step down from the role this coming summer. In February, Tressel submitted a letter requesting for consideration for the full-time position.

On Friday, the Plain Dealer posted both of Tressel's letters to the university, the first dated January 25, 2014 and the second dated February 25, 2014.

According to the Plain Dealer, the second letter contains Tressel's pitch for a possible internal candidate. Tressel is one of the only candidates in the field without a doctoral degree.

[Tressel] said the university is at a crossroads that an external candidate may not be able to "competitively navigate." He wrote the first phase of his presidency would involve "tough, transparent decisions that would be disruptive to the status quo" to stabilize the university's fiscal health.

Akron's Presidential Advisory and Screening Committee is still accepting applications. It will select a group of recommended finalists who are likely to visit campus in April and meet with school administrators.

Tressel resigned as head football coach at Ohio State in May 2011 after a pattern of NCAA violations. Since landing at Akron, he has also taught a class, "Principles of Coaching," along with another professor. Campus Union's own Martin Rickman attended a session of the class last September.
