Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is one of three finalists in the running to become the University of Akron's next president, the school announced on Tuesday.

Last month it was reported that Tressel, Akron's current executive vice president of student success, was one of 19 candidates vying to become the university's next president. In January, Tressel submitted a letter recommending his candidacy for the school's interim presidency, but he submitted a second letter in February requesting consideration for the full-time position.

Akron announced on Tuesday that it had narrowed its candidate pool down to three applicants: Tressel, Ronald A. Nykiel, provost of University of Maryland Eastern Shore and former dean of business of Husson University; and Scott L. Scarborough, provost of the University of Toledo and former executive vice president for finance and administration of DePaul University.

According to the report, each finalist will visit Akron's campus and meet with several groups that include "faculty, students, college deans, trustees and the public."

Tressel resigned from his role as Ohio State's head football coach in May 2011 after a pattern of NCAA violations. Since landing at Akron, he has also taught a class, “Principles of Coaching,” along with another professor. Campus Union’s Martin Rickman attended a session of the class last September.
