There will be no Valero Alamo Bowl in 2014. That's because the bowl will move to a Friday night kickoff on Jan. 2, 2015, the bowl announced Wednesday.

The Alamo Bowl first kicked off in 1993 and played 20 of its first 21 matchups in the last week of December. The lone outlier came after the 2009 season when Texas Tech defeated Michigan State 41-31 on Jan. 2, 2010.

Derrick Fox, Valero Alamo Bowl President and CEO, said the bowl couldn't pass up a chance to move to 2015.

“This year’s calendar provided us an excellent prime time Friday slot to showcase the Valero Alamo Bowl’s improved match-up featuring the top teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences after the College Football Playoff,” Fox said. "Our renewal rates are the highest in our history as fans are excited to welcome Top 25 teams to play in front of capacity crowds at the Alamodome."

The annual Alamo Bowl takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
