Michigan State’s 2020 recruiting class got a pretty big boost on Monday night with the announcement that Powder Springs (GA) McEachern 3-star running back Jordon Simmons had committed to the Spartans.

Simmons announced his commitment just a couple of weeks after taking an official visit to East Lansing back on September 28th for Michigan State’s 40-31 win over Indiana.

When Spartan Nation spoke with Simmons over the summer, he admitted he didn’t know much about Michigan State when he first received the offer from the Spartans but said that after spending some time on campus, he was quick to put Michigan State on his list of top schools.

“It means a lot to me,” he said. “When I first got the offer, I didn’t know much about Michigan State, but once I went up there and got a chance to see the campus and the school, I really enjoyed myself and really enjoyed the school overall and I fell in love with Michigan State. I’d probably put them in my top schools overall.”

Simmons, a 5-foot-10, a 185-pound standout who runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.4 range, received 21 offers and originally put the Spartans in his top 10 back in July along with Oregon, Arkansas, LSU, Georgia, Florida State, Colorado, Ole Miss, Louisville, and West Virginia. Simmons also held offers from Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.

Simmons told Spartan Nation that when he visited East Lansing, he felt a connection with the coaching staff and was appreciative of the way he and his family were treated when he was on campus.

“The coaching staff was great,” he said. “They showed me a lot of love, they enjoyed me being there and I really enjoyed being there. I want to get back up there and check out the school more because I’m really interested now that I’ve been there. The coaches showed me great hospitality – not only me but to my family also.”

Simmons’ commitment is an important one for the Spartans as the running back group has been depleted with the news of both Connor Heyward and La’Darius Jefferson entering the transfer portal this season. Considering those losses, it’s not out of the question that Simmons could be an immediate contributor when he arrives in East Lansing, providing depth behind redshirt freshman Elijah Collins and true freshman Anthony Williams.
