Philippe Gilbert out of Tour de France with leg injury

PARIS (AP) Former world champion Philippe Gilbert won't ride in the Tour de France next month because of a right leg injury.

Gilbert withdrew from the Tour de Suisse on Tuesday because of the injury ''that will keep him from being considered for the BMC Racing Team's Tour de France roster,'' his team said.

Gilbert is still suffering from a ''non-displaced fracture'' after crashing at the Fleche Wallonne in April.

The BMC leader at the Tour, which starts on July 4, will be Tejay van Garderen. The American was runner-up to Chris Froome at the Criterium du Dauphine last weekend.

BMC president Jim Ochowicz says, ''We want the best eight candidates (to support Van Garderen) at the start in Utrecht and, right now, Philippe is not at his best.''
