BERN, Switzerland (AP) Simon Spilak of Slovenia won the Tour de Suisse by just five seconds on Sunday, when Geraint Thomas tired late in the time-trial stage.

Spilak was third overall going into the ninth and final day but was second-fastest in the 38-kilometer (24-mile) stage to take the title.

Britain's Thomas wasted his chance in the last five kilometers (three miles), eventually placing fifth in the time-trial, 18 seconds behind Spilak.

Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands won the stage in 48 minutes, 36 seconds and rose to third overall.

Overnight leader Thibaut Pinot of France dropped to fourth, trailing by 45 seconds.

The 28-year-old Spilak's previous top-tier win also was in Switzerland, at the 2010 Tour de Romandie.

The Tour de Suisse is the last major Tour de France warm-up.
