An Outlaw Bidder Is Toying with Sellers of Aaron Hernandez Memorabilia on eBay

One of the most inexplicable stories of the past couple weeks, or ever, was the phenomenon of Aaron Hernandez jerseys selling like hotcakes on eBay. While some suggestions made a little bit of sense—Econ 101? Halloween?—emerging reports tell a different, more reassuring story: That some righteous eBayer is bidding these items up to $1,000 (when many are available, including ones eligible for "Buy it now", at much lower prices) with no intention to actually pay for them.

Martin Rodgers reports for Yahoo:

One seller obtained a winning bid of $305 for a Hernandez jersey and a signed mini-helmet, only to receive a hostile message from the supposed buyer.

"I don't think that I will be getting paid," the seller wrote to Yahoo! Sports. "The person emailed me stating I should 'burn the jersey and stop seeking money for that morons (sic) actions'. Looks like the person has some kind of social agenda."

On Wednesday alone, Yahoo! Sports was able to find details of 15 Hernandez jerseys the supposed buyer had "bought," totaling $3,806 at an average of just over $250 a jersey.

A lawyer suggested to Rodgers that a possible remedy for the "unfortunate" sellers would be to pursue damages in civil court, but that seems like a lot of trouble to go through to realize the profits garnered from capitalizing on the infamy of a suspected murderer.
