Despite the increasing evidence about the negative long-term effects of playing pro football, NFL players make considerably less money over the course of their careers than their counterparts in other leagues.

Business Insider put together the above chart that shows, despite the NFL dominance in the ratings, its players will make a quarter as much as NBA players, and half as much as NHL players over the course of their careers. A variety of factors obviously come into play here, like the shorter careers and larger rosters in the NFL, as well as bigger outliers in the NBA, such as Kobe Bryant making just under a quarter of a billion dollars in his career so far. While a $6.1 million career is obviously nothing to scoff at, it is still surprising to see the players of America's most popular league make the least of any athlete.
