Highly-Touted Twins Prospect Moonlights as Substitute Teacher in Offseason

Minor league pitcher Alex Meyer, who was picked in the first round of the 2011 draft and is ranked by Baseball America as the no. 4 prospect in the Twins organization, is not only a hot commodity for his on-field talents. As the Indianapolis Star reports, Meyer, who signed a $2 million contract out of college, is also highly in demand from faculty in the Greensburg, Ind. school system in which he grew up and from whom he now earns $63 per day to substitute teach:
"Hopefully, I'm able to play baseball and have a nice, long career," Meyer said. "But you never know what's going to happen with that. So you've always got to be able to have something on the ready."
According to the story, students sometimes recognize Meyer and ask him for autographs, but oftentimes they really don't know or care who he is. All of them, however, must refrain from texting or using Facebook in class, lest they get caught and have their mobile device confiscated by the 6'9" professional athlete and self-proclaimed "phone Nazi".
