2K Sports today confirmed that the MLB 2K franchise will not be renewed for 2014, thereby ending the series' 13-game run. Speaking with Joystiq, a 2K rep said,
"We are very proud of the achievements made by the MLB 2K team and look forward to their contributions to our future titles, including NBA 2K—our industry's #1 rated and #1 selling basketball franchise."
The reason for the cancellation was not specified. Though licensing issues are a possibility, it's equally likely that, given the decision to move MLB devs onto NBA 2K, 2K Sports has simply decided to focus on its premier basketball franchise.
That said, it's not inconceivable for MLB to be resurrected in the future. And, although the most recent installment, MLB 2K13, was criticized for more or less being identical to 2K12, let us not forget that it's also the reason a college student won $250,000. [Source: Joystiq]
