The Bum Phillips Opera is a Real Thing

[vimeo 88364932 w=600 h=338]

Bum Phillips All-American Opera opened in New York this week, and it is exactly what the title says: an opera based on the life of legendary Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips.

Sports on Earth's Mike Tanier reports that the unlikely subject matter leads the performance to some pretty odd places, including songs from both Earl Campbell and Jesus, as well as artistic depiction of the Oilers struggles with the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers teams of the '70s.

The opera's composers say they met briefly with Phillips before he passed away at the age of 90 last year, and received his blessing for the project, which runs at New York's La MaMa Theater through the end of March.
