This day in sports 100 years ago, the leading story in The Washington Times dealt with the rising popularity of bowling. "So large an entry is anticipated for the duckpin tournament which opens at the Palace alleys on the 27th of this month, that the board of governors is now considering the abrogation of the clause in the constitutions in Washington City duckpin association which prohibits the rolling of games in the annual tournament on Saturday nights."

So, in short, 100 years ago, it was illegal to bowl on Saturday nights.
