Sunderland goalie wants to reimburse fans after 8-0 loss

Sunderland lost 8-0 to Southampton this weekend, in a game that might have been uglier than the scoreline would indicate. Two of Southampton's goals were put in by Sunderland defenders.

Vito Mannone, the Black Cats' goalie, feels bad for any Sunderland fans that made the more than five-hour drive down to Southampton and says he and his teammates should cover the costs of their trips.

"I will personally talk to the team to see if it is possible to pay for their tickets and their trip," Mannone said, according to the BBC.

"We should do it because we didn't put a foot in, we didn't work hard," he added. "We started the game well but after we conceded we threw in the towel and I include myself."

The good start Mannone refers to is presumably the 11-minute period before Santiago Vergini fired a rocket into the back of his own net from just inside the box. The ensuing 79 minutes did not go as well.
