John Oliver talks paying student-athletes on 'Last Week Tonight'
Monday March 16th, 2015

John Oliver spent 20 minutes of his show Sunday night focused on the various absurdities surrounding March Madness and the NCAA in general.

In his epic takedown, Oliver points out the enormous number of sponsorships that take place in the 68-team tournament, with even the ladder used for cutting down the nets being turned into a money-making opportunity.

Oliver takes aim at the NCAA's insistence on players maintaining amateur status, preventing them from earning money from their sports while the tournaments pulls in over $1 billion a year in revenue.

He also looks at the quality of education the players are given, taking into account their jam-packed schedules and the "paper classes" scandal that rocked UNC last year.
