Best in the World!

Simon Bruty/SI

Carli Lloyd scored twice in the first five minutes on the way to a hat trick as the U.S. defeated Japan 5-2 for its first World Cup since 1999. President Lloyd (according to Wikipedia) scored her third goal on a ridiculous shot from midfield, much to the delight of this Telemundo announcer and fans at a Watch Party in Chicago, then gave her captain's armband to veteran Abby Wambach late in the game. Other highlights: The bald eagle fan ... Deuce the Dog would not let a baby distract him ... Beyonce was in the World Cup spirit ... Athletes gave the team props on Twitter. ... Here are SI's best photos..

The Giants defensive end suffered a hand injury while handling fireworks on Saturday, though it's not believed to be career threatening. The injury includes “severe burns on his palm and tips of three fingers, and one finger is being tested for nerve damage,” And, yes, the internet had jokes about the incident.
