No, that’s not a marijuana leaf on Travis Shaw’s bat knob.
The Boston Red Sox first baseman took to Twitter on Tuesday to clarify as much. You see, there must still be some people who mistake a buckeye leaf—as in the buckeye leaf made popular by the Ohio State Buckeyes’ football helmet stickers—for one of a different variety.
Excellent job by Shaw getting in front of this story.
Shaw is a 25-year-old infielder playing his first major-league season. A Washington Court House, Ohio native, he played his college ball at Kent State before the Red Sox selected him in the ninth round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
In 34 games with the Red Sox—he was called up from Triple A Pawtucket in July—Shaw is batting .294 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs.
