Watch: Florida State kick returner switches jerseys before kickoff

Kick returners Jalen Ramsey and Kermit Whitfield both wear the same number, so something had to give.

What happens when two players who wear the same number both take the field for a play?

See for yourself below.

Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey and fellow kick returner Kermit Whitfield both wear No. 8. Ramsey, a new addition to the special teams unit this year, was forced to put a different number on over his jersey for the kickoff.

It’s common to see two players, one defensive and one offensive, with the same jersey number in college football, but rarely do you see them take the field together.

What’s even more uncommon here is that the temporary number worn by Ramsey, No. 17, is retired by the school. It belonged to QB Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner.

Jalen Ramsey was called upon to return kicks this year for the Seminoles after they dropped from No. 1 to No. 88 in kick-return average last season.

Florida State won their opener 59–16 over Texas State, and faces USF on Sept. 12.
