Fifteen years ago, Randy Johnson made a bird explode in what seemed like the single most unlikely occurrence in the history of Major League Baseball.

As mathematically improbable as that moment was, it came very close to happening again on Monday night as the Royals took on the Cardinals and pitcher Adam Wainwright released an 84-mph pitch that nearly ended another avian life.

Somehow the bird did not distract Kansas City’s Cheslor Cuthbert, who managed to foul off the pitch. The Royals then spent the rest of the second inning avenging the near assault by scoring four runs and eventually winning 6–2.
